Jesus and Community is by Gerhard Lohfink. It deals with how Jesus saw the church and how he viewed his disciples’ roles. There was no founding of a physical church for the historical Jesus. He was not a Christian, but rather Jewish and the church, which is, at its most basic, a gathering of like-minded people who assemble as a cult, was long established. His twelve, the men who followed him, were expected to spread the word and continue with his ministry. They are as close as the New Testament comes to mentioning an organization or the implications of Christianity as a future entity. Without losing from sight the whole of Israel, he bound the reign of God to his community of disciples (29). Two groups believed his message in Israel. One group awaited the kingdom of God in their village or city and the other group actually followed him physically.
