Edward Estlin Cummings was an American Renaissance Man. A poet, painter, novelist and playwright, most remembered for his poetry, he was considered avant garde for his time, and truly a man for all seasons.
He was of an affluent and influential family, born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and naturally a product of the Harvard educational system (Kennedy 1980). He graduated magna cum laude in 1915 with a BA and in 1916 took his Masters in English and Classical studies. At Harvard he wrote poetry for the Harvard Monthly, a newspaper, and later for the Harvard Advocate. It was at that time that he met John Dos Pasos (Laucanno 2004) and began his career as a poet.
